Release Date: Wednesday, September 30, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. - The Northwest
Christian University Department of campus ministries announces that
world renowned speaker and author Tony Campolo will speak in the
NCU chapel service on Friday, October 16th.
Campus Pastor Steve Poetzl said, "Tony Campolo is a world-class
speaker. To have such a highly sought after and recognized speaker
at NCU is a tremendous blessing. Tony doesn't usually have time to
come to smaller schools because he is in such great demand, so it
is an amazing thing to have a Christian speaker of this caliber on
our campus."
Dr. Campolo is the Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Eastern
University in St. Davids Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Eastern
College and earned his Ph.D. from Temple University. Founder and
President of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of
Education (EAPE), Dr. Campolo has worked to create, nurture and
support programs for at-risk children in cities across North
America, and has helped establish schools and universities in
several developing countries.
Dr. Campolo is a media commentator on religious, social and
political matters, having been a guest on television
programs like The Colbert Report, Nightline, Crossfire, Politically
Incorrect, The Charlie Rose Show, Larry King Live, CNN Dayside, CNN
News, and MSNBC News. He co-hosted his own television series,
Hasing It Out, on the Odyssey Network, and presently hosts Across
the Pond, a weekly program on the Premier Christian Radio Network
in England. He is also a highly respected and sought after guest on
radio stations across the United States, Canada, the United
Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
He is the author of 35 books, with the latest releases in
February 2008, Red Letter Christians, A Citizen's Guide to
Faith and Politics (Regal), and July 2007, The God of
Intimacy and Action (Jossey-Bass). Dr. Campolo is an ordained
minister, has served American Baptist Churches in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania, and is presently recognized as an associate pastor of
the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia.
Campolo will be speaking at NCU in conjunction with a
partnership and financial assistance from Compassion International.
Pastor Poetzl met the campus speaker coordinator for Compassion
International at the annual Campus Pastor Conference in California
this spring. Poetzl shared that a number of Northwest Christian
University faculty members had challenged him to try and get
Campolo on campus and after numerous emails and detail
arrangements, Campolo accepted the invitation. "The bottom line,"
said Poetzl, "is that God opened the door and gave us favor with
both Compassion International and the Evangelical Association for
the Promotion of Education, and we are very excited for this
opportunity."
Chapel will be moved to the Morse Event Center for the day, to
accompany the expected throng of visitors for this special event.
Chapel takes place from 11:00-11:50 am.
