Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I start in the application
process?
You can complete the application process online or after receiving
an application packet in the mail, complete the application form
and return it, along with your application fee, to the address
listed. Upon receipt of any application item, we will open a file
for you. All application materials need not be sent in at the same
time. Click here to request an application
packet.
Which test should I
take?
The GRE and MAT have equivalent predictive value. Your choice of
either test will not be a factor in the selection process. For more
information, see the Admission Test Options page in the application
packet.
What if my undergrad GPA is below 3.0 or my test
scores are below the minimum?
The selection committee evaluates applicants' overall capabilities
for success in the program. A lower than required GPA or test score
will not automatically disqualify a candidate for admission
consideration but higher GPAs and test scores make you more
competitive in the overall selection process.
How much is it going to
cost?
The base tuition is $570 per credit. In
addition there is a $50 application fee and a $200 required
deposit. Estimated book costs are $3,300 over the course of the
program.
Is financial aid
available?
Students enrolled in a minimum of three credits per semester may be
eligible for federal financial aid. For more information, contact
NCU's Financial Aid Office at 541-684-7201.
When will classes
meet?
Each course consists of one evening class (5-8:30 p.m.) a week for
5 weeks plus an occasional Saturday class (8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.).
Practica experience during the second year involves an additional
afternoon or evening a week plus whatever time is needed to see two
to three clients. Internship experience requires a 2-day per week
commitment in the final year.
How much time will I be spending outside
class?
Most students spend a minimum of eight hours per week beyond class
time for non-practicum courses. Time spent in practicum courses
averages six to eight hours per week. During practica, supervision
groups meet 1 1/2 hours per week and students additionally receive
one hour of triadic supervision per week. Clients are scheduled by
practica students as their schedules allow. Internship during the
third year involves an additional 16 hours per week.
Can I complete the Program
part-time?
While it is possible to do the Program on a part-time basis,
students are strongly encouraged to complete it as prescribed. The
strength of the cohort model is an important factor in students'
academic, professional, and personal growth.
How will an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health
Counseling benefit me?
Persons with a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
enjoy careers in counseling agencies, substance abuse programs, EAP
programs, schools, and private practice. Completion of this degree
is the first step toward state licensure as a professional
counselor.
When will I be able to see
clients?
Students in the program begin seeing clients during their second
year, following successful completion of first year
courses.
