Frequently Asked Questions

Where do new students live?
All first year students (freshmen) live in Burke-Griffeth Hall. Burke-Griffeth is also home to several upperclassmen. Mom Richart apartments are for continuing students and based upon availability.

Do male and female students live together?
One floor in Burke-Griffeth is designated for male students and one floor for female students. Mom Richart is comprised of 20 self-contained apartments, so floors can easily accommodate both males and females.

What phone/data access is available in the living areas?
Each student room and apartment is equipped with two wired ethernet ports for high-speed access to the campus network. Each room and apartment is also equipped with one phone jack that provides local calling access.

Wireless services are located on the first floor of Burke-Griffeth, in lounges, and other areas around campus. If you are having trouble connect to the NCU internet, please contact the Help Desk.

What should my student bring with him/her for living in campus-provided housing?
Northwest Christian University provides beds, dressers, desks, and chairs for each student. Anything else the student would like to have, he or she must bring. Here are some specific things to remember:

  • Bring bed linens for extra-long twin beds.
  • Bring a telephone.
  • Bring a surge-protected power bar. Fire codes prohibit the use of extension cords of any kind in the living areas. Only power bars with surge protectors are allowed.
  • We recommend that you contact your future roommate to coordinate bringing larger items like a TV, stereo, large chairs, couches, etc.

What NOT to bring:

  • Pets that won't live underwater
  • Water beds
  • Firearms, ammunition, weapons
  • Electric Blankets
  • Candles, incense
  • Open coiled appliances

When will I find out where I am assigned and who my roommate(s) will be?
We typically send out room assignments in mid-uly. When you receive your room assignment, it will include the name and contact information for your roommate.

How many roommates will I have?
One roommate. Our housing options are standard double-occupancy. There are some options that involve a single or triple room in  Burke-Griffeth Hall. Those are very limited and are only considered under unique circumstances.

When can I move in?
The official check-in day for fall is the first day of Orientation. We strongly recommend that you arrive on campus on Saturday morning and move into your housing assignment at that time. Some students are required to move in early because they are involved with an athletic team, music group, or other activity that requires early arrival. If you are involved with one of those groups, you will receive information about your arrival date from your coach, director or the coordinator of the activity with which you are involved.

Where do I go to check in?
If you arrive during Orientation, specific instructions will be given prior to your arrival on campus. When you arrive for Orientation there will be check-in center where different offices on campus can check you in. At the end of the check in line, the Residence Life team will there to check you in to your new room.

If you arrive on any other day during regular business hours, please go to the Student Life Office on the first floor of the Goodrich building. If the office is closed when you arrive, please call the Resident Assistant on-duty at 541-517-1379.

What can I do to personalize my room?
We encourage students to decorate and personalize their rooms. Poster Putty is recommended. Rooms may not be painted, nor may the facility be modified in any way. This includes putting up shelves that are screwed into the wall, changing light fixtures or switches, drilling holes in desks or cutting the bottom off of your door (all of which have been tried in the past). Due to fire code, nothing may be hung from the ceiling due and no University-owned furniture may be removed from the room.

What is a loft kit and how can I get one?
Students may request to have their bed lofted by using a loft-kit. A loft kit allows you to raise a bed in order to create a workspace beneath. Loft kits are not available for every room and are disbursed on a first-come first-served basis. Please talk with an RA when you move in on campus to receive a loft kit.

How big is my room?
Layouts and dimensions of typical rooms in all living areas can be found here.

Can I watch R-rated movies in my living area?
Students are encouraged to be sensitive to their living community when selecting movies that will be viewed in a public arena (lounges, Rug Room), however there is not a policy regarding R-rated movies. If a student is offended by something that is being publicly viewed, the student is encouraged to engage in conversation with their colleagues about the matter. Conversations regarding sensitive subjects can be facilitated by Residence Life staff. Part of living in a community is the ability to engage in conversation on the basis of mutual respect.
