Head Men's Soccer Coach
Hander was named the fourth head coach in the 12-year history of the NCU men’s soccer program in December 2018. He replaces Benny Flores who moved over to the Beacon women’s program after the fall 2018 season.
Athletic Director Corey Anderson said, “Coach Hander brings a level of knowledge, experience and leadership that will continue to move our men’s soccer program in an upward trajectory. The combination of his past playing days, along with his vast coaching experience have prepared him well for this opportunity.”
I am excited to be joining the NCU family, said Hander, “and am humbled by the privilege God has given me to lead these fine young men. I wish to thank God first and foremost as all glory goes to Him. I would also like to thank Dr. Womack, Michael Fuller, Corey Anderson, Sarah Freeman and the rest of the search committee for entrusting me to lead these gentlemen. I believe Coach Benny has left me with a great group to continue to build into something special and I looking forward to getting going and putting my mark on NCU soccer.”
Hander is currently the Technical Advisor with TFA Willamette Futbol Club and is the head coach for their U23 team. He also recently spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the women’s program at Corban University. During his time with the Warriors, the team went 22-12-2 after going just 7-11-1 the previous season. His recruiting efforts helped to land the 2016 Cascade Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year along with six All-CCC performers.
Hander’s extensive coaching background also includes stints with Linfield College, where his father had previously served as the head coach, and a number of soccer clubs throughout the state. More recently, he served as the coach at Philomath High School, leading the team to the state championship in 2008.
“As the product of being a coach’s son, coaching and the game of soccer are in Will’s blood,” said Anderson. “Through this hiring process, I have observed and heard many speak of Will’s ability to teach, demonstrate, communicate and be the leader of the NCU Men’s Soccer program. I look forward to working with him and introducing him to the Beacon Athletics family!”
Hander retains a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Diploma as well as an NSCAA Advance National Diploma and a Level 1 Goalkeeping Diploma.
During his playing days he competed at Cornell College and Pacific University, earning All-Conference honors on three separate occasions. He went on to play for the USL Cascade Surge.
Hander earned a BA in Business Management from Pacific and went on to complete significant studies in a pair of graduate programs; one from Cleveland State University in Sports Management, one in Sports Medicine, Fitness, and Health from the United States Sports Academy. Hander spent four years at Snap Fitness putting his education to good use as he went from being a club manager and personal trainer to the area GM in under a year.
Hander and his wife Maura have two children, daughter Rian and son Isaac. They reside in Philomath.
